SUMMARY:Introduction to Clay – Hand Building (Thursdays and Saturdays)
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Clay – Hand Building is a bi-weekly program where students learn basic elements of clay hand building methods. Although each session is designed to work independently\, it is recommended for students to take various workshops to perfect the medium and become comfortable with the materials. \nOne hand-built object will be made during class. Underglaze (color) will be added during class by the student\, work will be cleaned up and bisque fired after work has dried\, clear glaze will be applied by the instructor after first firing\, and a second firing to finish the piece will be run immediately after. Figures and forms are first constructed through recognizable visual structures\, then gradually deconstructed through overlapping shapes\, interruptions\, and spatial ambiguity. This push and pull across the picture plane challenges the eye to continuously reorganize the image\, creating moments where foreground and background compete\, merge\, or dissolve into one another. In doing so\, the work mirrors the way perception itself functions – constantly searching for meaning\, connection\, and wholeness within fragmented experiences.
