SUMMARY:Figure/Ground
DESCRIPTION:DeGraaf’s studio practice is deeply informed by the Gestalt principles of perception\, particularly the relationship between figure and ground. Rather than presenting a stable or singular image\, his compositions invite viewers to move between what is seen immediately and what slowly emerges through closer observation. Figures and forms are first constructed through recognizable visual structures\, then gradually deconstructed through overlapping shapes\, interruptions\, and spatial ambiguity. This push and pull across the picture plane challenges the eye to continuously reorganize the image\, creating moments where foreground and background compete\, merge\, or dissolve into one another. In doing so\, the work mirrors the way perception itself functions – constantly searching for meaning\, connection\, and wholeness within fragmented experiences.

SUMMARY:An Exploration of Color
DESCRIPTION:Since childhood\, Sarah Rocca has been captivated by the power of imagery\, the ability to freeze time and preserve memories through the art of painting with light. Her vivid imagination\, once confined to the colorful worlds she envisioned as a child\, found its voice through digital tools. This fusion of creativity and technology allowed Rocca to bring her unique perspective to life and share it with a broader audience. \nRocca’s use of color serves not only as a visual element but as a narrative device. Through her deliberate color choices\, she conveys mood\, emotion and unspoken subtext\, inviting viewers to engage with each piece on a personal level. An Exploration of Color is a visual memoir\, a journey through Rocca’s experiences of love\, divorce\, depression and joy. Each image encourages the viewer to reflect on how color influences their emotions and to interpret the story it tells through their own lens. \nClick here to learn more of the artist – Sarah Rocca.

SUMMARY:Ayiti: The Black Pearl
DESCRIPTION:Resilience\, resistance\, and revolutionary hope for the future. These are the major themes of Haiti’s 221-year history. As the first country in the western hemisphere to be founded as the result of a successful slave revolt\, it is clear that revolutionary attitudes have defined the country itself as well as its historical impact. Haiti played a significant role in abolition and liberating many countries from colonial rule\, including: Santo Domingo(now the Dominican Republic)\, Venezuela\, Colombia\, Ecuador\, and Peru. But the ransom that France forced Haiti to pay for their own liberation set up the conditions that would lead to the country’s current challenges that have left the country less than hopeful about its future. \nA myopic\, sensationalized fantasy about an impoverished\, lawless state that is essentially hopeless and ungovernable is the default perspective used to discuss Haiti. However\, Haiti’s potential lies in the reigns of self-determination being placed back in the hands of her people. This prospect is only possible through a revival of the same revolutionary imagination that freed Haiti the first time and allowed Haitians to realize a future no one thought was possible. \nWhile viewing the paintings in this series the audience is invited to challenge their preconceived notions about Haiti and her people through the lens of the attitudes and hope necessary to liberate Haiti from its current challenges. By emphasizing the beauty of Haiti\, its culture\, history\, and people\, we can shift the way we talk about Haiti and Haitians with the goal of advancing a brighter future for the country. \nThis is a Weekly Recurring Event\nRuns from May 1\, 2026 to May 28\, 2026 and happens every:\nTuesdays: 10:00am – 6:00pm Timezone: Eastern Time (US & Canada)\nWednesdays: 10:00am – 6:00pm Timezone: Eastern Time (US & Canada)\nThursdays: 10:00am – 6:00pm Timezone: Eastern Time (US & Canada)\nFridays: 10:00am – 6:00pm Timezone: Eastern Time (US & Canada)\nSaturdays: 10:00am – 4:00pm Timezone: Eastern Time (US & Canada)
