Some clubs are remembered for their architecture. Others are remembered for the lives lived within them. Since opening its doors more than 60 years ago, Lighthouse Point Yacht Club has quietly become woven into the fabric of the city it calls home. Families have celebrated weddings overlooking the marina, children have learned to swim before growing into members themselves, and generations of boaters have gathered at the docks before heading to Ocean Reef, Bimini, the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. Long before luxury waterfront living became one of South Florida’s defining real estate stories, the club had already established something far more meaningful: a place where boating, recreation and family life naturally come together.
Now that legacy is preparing for its next chapter. Rather than renovating an aging clubhouse, the club is undergoing a complete redevelopment designed to serve members for generations to come. The project transforms the property into a modern waterfront campus where architecture, wellness, recreation, dining and residential living are thoughtfully connected by the marina that has always been at the heart of the club.
“This redevelopment represents the next chapter of Lighthouse Point Yacht Club,” says Terry Paterson, owner and developer. “It is an investment in the future of the Club, the city of Lighthouse Point and South Florida. By creating a modern, world-class facility, we are ensuring the Club remains relevant for the next 50 years while honoring everything that has made it special.”
That vision required patience. Before construction ever began, more than seven years were spent acquiring the property. It was an extensive undertaking between securing approvals, completing engineering, navigating land-use and zoning changes and working through an entitlement process that included 28 public hearings. But it helped shape a project intended to fit both its members and the surrounding community.
The redevelopment’s centerpiece is a new 43,000-square-foot clubhouse that embraces contemporary coastal architecture without losing its connection to the club’s nautical roots.
Renderings reveal expansive walls of glass overlooking the marina, allowing natural light to fill the interiors while preserving uninterrupted waterfront views. Warm wood accents, natural stone and soft neutral finishes create a refined yet welcoming atmosphere.
The architecture has been carefully arranged to keep the water at the center of the experience. Open gathering spaces transition naturally onto generous terraces overlooking the marina, while landscaped arrival areas create an elegant approach to the clubhouse. Throughout the design, indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly flow together, allowing members to remain connected to the waterfront wherever they are on the property.
One of the clubhouse’s signature architectural features is a wine cellar and tasting room.
“Having spent many years in development, I’ve learned that the most memorable projects are defined by thoughtful details rather than just their size,” Paterson says. “While I’m excited about every aspect of the redevelopment, I believe one of the true signature spaces will be the glass-enclosed wine cellar and tasting room, anchored by a dramatic wraparound staircase.”
The redevelopment extends well beyond the clubhouse itself. A 10,400-square-foot wellness complex will introduce a state-of-the-art fitness center, spa facilities, steam rooms, saunas, indoor and outdoor spas and dedicated wellness spaces designed to make health and recreation part of everyday club life. The five Har-Tru tennis courts include three rooftop courts, expanding athletic opportunities while taking advantage of views across the property and the marina, which continues to anchor the club’s deep connection to South Florida’s boating culture.
Dining has also been thoughtfully reimagined. Multiple restaurants, bars, lounges and waterfront gathering spaces are designed to encourage members to linger, whether meeting friends for lunch after a morning on the water or enjoying dinner overlooking the marina. A new 280-person ballroom with an adjoining bridal suite ensures the club will continue to serve as one of the area’s premier destinations for weddings, celebrations and charitable events.
Yet perhaps the redevelopment’s greatest investment is not in its buildings. It is found in the families who will enjoy them.
“I’ve always believed that children are the future of our Club,” Paterson says. “Families are the foundation of our membership, and our vision was to create a place where grandparents, parents and children can spend quality time together while also having activities and programming tailored to every age group.”
That philosophy influenced nearly every aspect of the master plan. Expanded aquatics, youth sports, tennis, wellness initiatives, boating activities, summer camps and after-school programming ensure every generation has opportunities to connect. A dedicated youth clubhouse for the Little Skippers program will provide spaces for crafts, games, educational activities and indoor recreation, while preserving the club’s longstanding swim team tradition.
The waterfront also inspired one of the project’s most distinctive additions. Recognizing the ideal rowing conditions created by the protected Intracoastal Waterway, the club plans to introduce a rowing program that offers younger members another opportunity to experience the water while developing teamwork, discipline and confidence.
Community remains the thread running through every aspect of the redevelopment. Nowhere is that more evident than in the club’s Cruise Group, which has grown to nearly 400 participants who gather throughout the year for organized trips to Ocean Reef, Bimini, the Florida Keys, the Exumas and the Abacos. These shared experiences have forged friendships that extend well beyond the marina and reinforce the close-knit culture that has long distinguished Lighthouse Point Yacht Club.
The redevelopment also includes 22 luxury waterfront townhomes and a homesite for a custom single-family waterfront estate, enabling members to make the club part of everyday life while enjoying immediate access to boating, dining, wellness and recreation within a private gated community.
As South Florida continues to redefine waterfront living, Lighthouse Point Yacht Club is taking a different approach from many of the region’s newest developments. Rather than starting with real estate, it begins with community. The architecture, amenities and residences have all been designed to support the experiences that have defined the club for more than six decades.
Ultimately, this redevelopment is about more than constructing a beautiful new clubhouse. It is about protecting a legacy while creating new traditions for future generations, ensuring that one of South Florida’s most beloved waterfront clubs continues to thrive as both a destination and a community for decades to come.
