Broward Trust for Historic Preservation:
Protect and preserve the Fort Lauderdale beach legacy

This stretch of beach is where Fort Lauderdale began. In 1838, during the Second Seminole War, the U.S. military constructed the third fort at the mouth of the New River. That fort gave rise to the name “Fort Lauderdale.”

Today, the area still holds buried evidence of the third fort, including the likely location of the original fortification. It is also connected to the legacy of key historical figures like Abiaki (Sam Jones), Captain Mackay Mackall, and others central to the Seminole Wars.

We have submitted a formal application to designate the area as a significant archaeological and historic site. Your support will help fund the certified archaeological testing required for that application to proceed through the city, state, and national levels.

Archaeological fieldwork includes test shovel surveys, trenching, coring, and analysis by licensed professionals. These surveys are required to protect and document the site before anything irreversible occurs.
