Call of the Wild

  • May 28, 2025
  • FLMag Staff
Make this summer the season you become one with nature — just don’t forget your sunblock.

1. Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, Fort Lauderdale

When Chicago lawyer Hugh Taylor Birch snagged some prime Fort Lauderdale real estate in 1895, little did he know his wedding gift to daughter Helen and son-in-law Frederic Bartlett would become a historic landmark. Bartlett, an artist and self-taught architect, built a Caribbean-inspired home, perfect for those fleeing chilly Northern winters. Today, guests can paddle from Coconut Cove and then stroll the grounds, spotting raccoons, herons and turtles. The gardens deliver postcard-worthy beach vistas.

2. Butterfly World, Coconut Creek

Butterfly World in Coconut Creek could convert even the staunchest bug-phobe. Home to over 20,000 butterflies from around the globe, it offers visitors an immersive flutter-fest. Walk amid delicate wings in massive aviaries, hand-feed chatty lorikeets and explore insect curiosities in the Bug Zoo — without screaming. Waterfalls and botanical gardens add serene touches to this vibrant, fluttering haven, making it ideal for nature enthusiasts and reluctant adventurers.

3. Tall Cypress Natural Area, Coral Springs

Think dense Florida wilderness minus the tourist crowds. At 66 acres, Tall Cypress Natural Area in Coral Springs shelters one of the region’s last intact swamps and pine flatwoods. A winding boardwalk navigates beneath cypress canopies alive with woodpeckers, owls and colorful warblers. Ferns and swamp lilies tangle below, hiding snakes, turtles and a flurry of butterflies like the dazzling malachite and Julia. Perfect for nature lovers who prefer their wildlife encounters from a comfortable wooden pathway.

4. Anne Kolb Nature Center, Hollywood

Since 1996, Hollywood’s Anne Kolb Nature Center has been the go-to spot for mangrove enthusiasts and coastal wildlife admirers. Covering 1,501 acres, it’s the largest park of its kind in Broward County. Visitors can ascend the observation tower for panoramic views, wander extensive trails or fish from the pier. Don’t miss the exhibit hall showcasing local ecology, or enjoy a picnic amid this lush mangrove sanctuary — a prime habitat for rare birds and curious wildlife.

5. Everglades Holiday Park, Fort Lauderdale

At Everglades Holiday Park, famous for TV’s Gator Boys, the real stars are the resident alligators — observed best from the safety of an airboat. Beyond adrenaline-filled rides, the park offers serene fishing spots and trails for leisurely walks. With amenities like boat rentals and picnic areas, this westernmost Broward spot is perfect for families craving adventure and relaxation. Just remember to keep hands inside the airboat.

6. Markham Park, Sunrise

Markham Park, on the edge of the Everglades, has it all — observatories, mountain biking trails galore and more. Whether flying model airplanes, playing disc golf or testing your aim at South Florida’s top public shooting facility, boredom isn’t an option. Campers and dog owners appreciate well-maintained facilities, while fitness buffs enjoy scenic jogging paths and pickleball courts. It’s a versatile destination suited for every outdoor enthusiast.
