Picture this: You’re driving with the windows down when suddenly you come face-to-face with a deer whose curious nose has found its way inside your car. Not only is this scenario likely, it’s exactly what will happen when you visit Parc Omega.
Located in picturesque Montebello, Quebec, Parc Omega is a place to discover North American wildlife in a setting unlike other zoos or wildlife parks.Covering over 2,000 acres, it boasts a 7.5-mile driving loop where you can witness more than 20 species of Canadian wildlife in their natural habitat.
Some you’ll see from afar, like the grizzly bears, while others, like the deer and elk, you can feed carrots to from the comfort of your vehicle. When you drive slowly, they’ll come sauntering towards your car. Roll your windows down and you’ll get up close and personal as they poke their heads inside looking for a delicious snack.
The animals here know visitors often have carrots for them and they are used to being fed by people. Should you prefer not to have them snooping inside your windows, just close them and drive slowly through the loop. You can simply watch the animals from your vehicle if you don’t want to feed or interact with them. The choice is yours.
During certain times of year, including elk mating season, you will be warned not to feed the males as they can be rather aggressive then. Otherwise, the animals tend to be very polite. If you do wish to feed them, the park suggests purchasing two bags of carrots as they do go fast, especially at the beginning of your drive. The entrance to the driving loop is by far the busiest spot for feeding the animals.
There are 19 different stops along your 7.5-mile drive. They are well marked, but be sure to grab a map of the park at the entrance so you don’t miss any of them. Halfway through the drive is the Land of the Pioneers attraction. It’s the ideal spot to stop and stretch your legs while exploring all the area has to offer. There is a lot to see and do here so plan to spend a while.
Inside the Land of the Pioneers you’ll find a snack bar, the perfect place to refuel before continuing your drive. For the ultimate Canadian experience, savor a poutine: French fries and cheese curds covered in gravy is a popular dish in Quebec and a must-try for visitors.
Walk off your delicious delicacy on the First Nations Trail, dedicated to the First Nations people and their contributions to the area. The history and culture of colonization are showcased within the trading post, the old farm and numerous totem poles along the trail.
Before leaving the Land of the Pioneers, be sure to visit the resident gray wolves in the wolf observatory. Not to worry, it’s perfectly safe as they are in an enclosure and can’t get to you. Feeding the wolves is not part of the experience. You are here to safely watch them roam in their natural habitat.
If this visit has you wanting more, why not stay overnight in one of the on-site Wolf or Wolf and Bear Cabins? It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience unlike any other in North America.
The Wolf and Bear cabins are brand new and accommodate up to four people. Their panoramic bay windows overlook the habitat of these incredible animals. No TV is needed during this stay as you’ll be watching wildlife in action. These modern and luxurious cabins are located in the heart of the forest. This attraction is incredibly popular. It is recommended that you plan ahead and book well in advance of your holiday.
And if you’re wary of attractions with animals, know that Omega Park is a member of Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA), which means they adhere to strict and rigorous standards of animal management, safety and well-being. The animals here have ample space to roam freely and are extremely well cared for. There are no small enclosures here, just 2,000 acres of land for both the animals and visitors to enjoy.
The park’s mission is “to educate through wonder by offering visitors memorable experiences in terms of the wildlife, culture and history of Quebec and Canada.” Come and experience the beauty of Canada’s nature and wildlife with a visit to Parc Omega.
