Dania Beach Patch Farmers Market
PATCH (It stands for People’s Access to Community Horticulture) does great work in the community. And you get to support that great work every time you turn up to buy some turnips. (Or, you know, whatever else you need.) It’s open weekday mornings and Saturdays from morning to early afternoon at 1201 W. Dania Beach Blvd. thepatchgarden.com
The Yellow Green Farmers Market
This massive market, located just off I-95 at 1940 N. 30th Rd. in Hollywood and open during the day on weekends, operates more like an old-country bazaar. There’s plenty of fresh, local food – as well as clothes, interesting soaps and toiletries, little cafes and even a couple bars, stalls selling interesting wine, some art … and on it goes. Go back as many times as you like and you’ll always find something new.ygfarmersmarket.com
Criswell Farm & Market
Tucked away just off Broward Boulevard at 24 NW Sixth Ave. and open during the day from Thursday through Sunday, this fun urban farm shows just what a cornucopia you can grow without very much room at all. On Sunday afternoons they also offer yoga, in case you want a bit of mindfulness with your weekly vegetable shopping. criswellfarm.com
Thunderbird Swap Shop Food Market
The Swap Shop’s legendary owner, Preston Henn, passed away last year. But his memory lives on out Sunrise Boulevard at one of the Fort Lauderdale area’s most unique landmarks. Like a sprawling metropolis, the Swap Shop is many things – but “excellent fresh food market” is not always the first bit that springs to mind. If you haven’t been there in years, you might be surprised to see what an extensive supply of food exists in the outdoor market. And how many grocery stores also offer you a fresh coconut drink to compliment your shopping? floridaswapshop.com
Marando Farms
This longtime favorite, nestled up against the tracks just off South Andrews at 1401 SW First Ave., offers some authentically rustic-feeling vibes right in the city – as well as some great local produce and unique, hard-to-find items. There’s now also a Marando Ranch out in Davie where, among other fun stuff, they’ve got a restaurant. marandoranch.com
