Feast on the Fourth

  • July 1, 2017
  • FLMag Staff

The Fourth of July isn’t really a meal holiday, and we think that’s a shame. So we came up with some ways to celebrate America in food.

The Ernie’s Menu at the Floridian

The Floridian Restaurant, Sorry, but we refuse to give you the Floridian’s address. It’s been there since 1937; you should know.
We are Americans, but we are also that noble, casually dressed subspecies of American known as Floridians. So we should eat at our namesake diner, particularly now that it’s taken on the menu of sadly departed Federal Highway institution Ernie’s Bar-B-Q and Lounge. Old Ernie’s classics – the conch chowder and fritters, the barbecue sandwiches, the Bimini bread – are right there, next to the classic American food the Floridian has always served.

The Rise & Shiner

The Brass Tap, 551 N Federal Hwy
What’s more American than a hamburger? How about a hamburger topped with a full American breakfast? The Rise and Shiner features a burger patty crowned with Applewood bacon, potato pancakes, a fried egg, cheddar and … wait for it … maple syrup. You don’t eat this burger as much as you go on an epic journey through breakfast and lunch.

A Hot Dog, Heaven Hot Dog

Hot Dog Heaven, 101 E Sunrise Blvd
You can get a chili dog, or one with sauerkraut on it. You can go fancy and get the Polish or Italian sausage. You can add cheese. You can get a massive pickle on the side. But mostly, what happens at tiny little Hot Dog Heaven is that they serve up hot dogs, Chicago-style. It’s a concept as simple as it is beautiful.

Lunch at Yellow Green Farmers Market

Yellow Green Farmers Market, 1940 N 40th Rd, Hollywood (just off I-95 next to the Sheridan Street Tri-Rail station)
America’s diversity is our strength – foodwise, we’re a country of Jamaican patties and Thai curries, Cuban ropa vieja and Ethiopian wat – and at Yellow Green, you can get the authentic flavors of just about everywhere. The massive complex, which is open during the day on Saturdays and Sundays only, also offers shopping for everything from fresh fruit to just-caught fish to clothing in styles from around the world.
