Vicious Cycle

  • August 1, 2018
  • FLMag Staff
As any cyclist will tell you, it’s hard to limit a bike collection to just four bikes, but we tried. Here are a few steeds to help round out your stable.

1. Road Bike: Specialized Tarmac

The big S’s perennial favorite road racing machine has been revamped for 2018. Not only is it significantly lighter than the previous version, but Specialized has spent considerable time testing the frame in the wind tunnel. What they’ve created is a bike that slips through the wind as well as many aerodynamic-specific frames.
Buy it if: You have dreams at night that you’re Peter Sagan.
Where to ride: A1A is always a great option – or head to your local bike shop and ask about cycling clubs or group rides. There’s something out there for everyone.
Starting at: $1,600.
Available at: Bike Tech, 2000 S Federal Hwy., 954.523.1178, biketechusa.com.

2. Mountain Bike: Scott Spark

The Scott Spark is a tried-and-true short-travel trail bike perfect for Florida riding. The key here is choice. Available in 27.5″ and 29″ wheel sizes, you can also pick between a high-end carbon fiber frame or a more affordable alloy version. Most models come equipped with Scott’s TwinLoc suspension; when it’s time to put the hammer down, the fork and shock are locked out simultaneously with a flick of the handlebar-mounted lever. When the going gets rough, flick the lever back and the 120–130mm of suspension travel will eat up the bumps with ease.
Buy it if: Whether you’re a beginner or expert, you want a perfect bike for the Sunshine State.
Where to Ride: Yep, mountain bike in Florida, it’s a thing. Believe it or not, Markham Park in Sunrise is only one of many places in South Florida to ride off-road. It also boasts some of the most challenging singletrack in the state.
Starting at: $1900.
Available at: Alex’s Bicycle Pro Shop, 11510 W State Rd. 84, Davie, 954.990.0836, alexbicycles.com.

3. E-Bike: Trek Verve+

Electric bikes are creating a huge buzz in the bike world lately. The idea here is not about blazing down Federal Highway at ludicrous speed, but about making cycling more accessible to everyone. Are you a little out of shape and need some help to get moving? Has time not been kind to your knees? Is your significant other a cyclo-holic and you just want to keep up? An e-bike may be the answer. You’re still doing the pedaling; these bikes just give you a helping hand.
Buy it if: You need a little extra help to get moving.
Where to Ride: Anywhere! Ride it to work, the park, or the beach. Just get out and ride.
Priced at: $2,300.
Available at: Trek Bicycle Store of Fort Lauderdale, 1621 E Sunrise Blvd., 954.527.9099, trekbikestoreusa.com.

4. Cruiser Bike: 3G Newport

Based out of Long Beach, California, 3G makes retro-style bikes that bring the style of the SoCal bike scene to everyone. Fat tires, a laid-back ride, and almost too many color options to choose from; this one is all about style. The aluminum Newport is available in single, three, seven or eight speed variations.
Buy it if: You plan to ride in board shorts and flip flops – cup holder optional.
Where to Ride: Head out to the beach and make a day of it. You’ll want to pull in somewhere for mimosas and brunch, so don’t forget a bike lock.
Starting at: $480.
Available at: Conte’s Bike Shop, 1739 E Sunrise Blvd., 754.300.5070, contebikes.com.
