Beyond California Rolls

Photography: Phat Boy Sushi.
The sushi scene is booming in South Florida, and it includes places that are trying new things and introducing diners to interesting new flavors.

Phat Boy Sushi Kitchen & Bar

Several locations, phatboysushi.com
There’s now a North Federal and a South Federal Phat Boy, as well as locations in Coral Springs, Davie and Deerfield. That’s testament to a fun, modern take on sushi. Hit the 3-to-6pm happy hour for Japanese street food, small plates and killer drinks.

Kaizen Sushi Bar & Grill

5640 N Federal Hwy., kaizenflorida.com
Kaizen’s big, diverse menu makes it the perfect spot for someone who might not be too experienced with sushi, or a group with lots of different tastes.

Sasaya Japanese Market

1956 E Sunrise Blvd., sasayajapanese.com
It’s easy to pass this shop specializing in Japanese food and other goods and not even realize they’re preparing meals on premises. You walk to the back and order from the small kitchen – and then if you’re feeling ambitious, you also leave with a few groceries to see if you can duplicate the amazing meal at home.

Ceviche Dozo

5715 Hollywood Blvd. #A, Hollywood, cevichedozo.com
It’s worth the trip to Hollywood to find this tiny oasis for authentic Japanese food. There’s a bit of ceviche on the menu, but mostly what you’ll find here is a deep dive into the true taste of Japan. As an added bonus, it’s one of the least expensive sushi places around.
