Made in the Sun

Florida has more of a history of nefarious alcohol importation than in-house booze making. But these days, there’s no prohibition on interesting spirits and even wines coming from the Sunshine State.

Shady Distillery 12 Mile Dark Rum

The Sistrunk Marketplace distillery is making a name while getting Fort Lauderdale back to its rum-runner, Fort Liquordale roots. Made with Florida molasses, this is proper rum with a sophisticated flavor palate. This isn’t just a standard rum for your favorite cocktail; it can be sipped on its own. (Although by all means, chuck some in a mai tai as well.) shadydistillery.com

ChainBridge Distillery Florida Basil Vodka

The Oakland Park distillery started out making traditional Hungarian brandies and has now branched out into vodka and rum. When they say “Florida basil,” they’re not kidding; for maximum freshness, they start the process on the day the basil is picked and arrives at the distillery. chainbridgedistillery.com

Florida Orange Groves Winery Port

This St. Pete-based winery does a full range of actual wines made right here in the Sunshine State. Port’s a classic winter after-dinner drink (even if the after-dinner temperatures are hovering around 75). They do three ports – a blackberry and blueberry, the chocolate-and-raspberry “Flamingo Fling” and perhaps the most Floridian of all, mango port. floridawine.com
