Old Time Refreshment

  • May 1, 2020
  • FLMag Staff
Our Fort Lauderdale forebears knew the value of living simply and creating something enjoyable out of not much. That is evidenced by Old Lauderdale Recipes, a book published by the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society that features recipes from Fort Lauderdale residents in the early-to-mid 20th century. In this time of trying to live more simply, we popped open the book to see what kind of cool, refreshing beverages those who came before us liked to enjoy.

1. Papaya Shake

  • 2 cups mashed ripe papaya
  • ¼ cup lime juice
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 ½ cup evaporated milk
  • 1 ½ cup water

Combine mashed fruit and sugar. Add lime juice, nutmeg, water and milk. Chill. To serve, shake with cracked ice and pour into glasses.

2. Thick Banana Nog

  • 3 ripe bananas
  • 2 cups pineapple juice
  • 1 package frozen sliced strawberries

Mash bananas in large bowl. Partially defrost strawberries. Mash into banana mixture. Add pineapple juice. Mix well. Pour over ice cubes.

3. Syllabub

  • 1 pint heavy cream
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup light cream
  • ½ cup wine or brandy

Mix heavy cream and light cream. Add sugar and wine. Churn or beat until foamy. Serve immediately.
