Treats in the Heat

  • June 1, 2017
  • FLMag Staff

School is out, the heat is on, and it’s time to celebrate summer. We picked a few favorite treats that are cool, indulgent – or better yet, both.

A Stork’s Smoothie

Wilton Manors, 2505 NE 15th Ave., storksbakery.com
We know what you’re thinking. Smoothies are health food, and Stork’s is where you go when you want to eat your weight in cake. But wait! Stork’s knows how to blend up lovely fruit, too – as well as peanut butter and chocolate. We like getting the Hawaiian Cream – pineapple, banana and coconut. Then, if we’re being completely honest, we like going back to the counter for a couple eclairs and a cannoli.

A Kilwins Milkshake

Fort Lauderdale, 809 E. Las Olas Blvd., Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, 117 Commercial Blvd., kilwins.com
Oh Kilwins, let us count the ways. Whether it’s your caramel-and-nut Tuttles, your many fudges or of course, your ice cream, you’ve got what we need. And that includes milkshakes done the best way possible – several scoops of whatever flavor on the counter grabs the fancy, and into the milkshake maker. One flavor we recommend is the Kilwins Tracks – vanilla ice cream, chocolate fudge and chocolate-covered peanut butter truffles. It works as a cone – and it definitely works in a milkshake. But really, you can’t go wrong with any Kilwin flavors done the old-fashioned way.

Bull Balls

210 SW 2nd St., bullmarketbar.com
Now granted, this dessert item at Himmarshee’s Bull Market American Bar and Kitchen might cause snickering among older kids in the group. Persist anyway, and you will be rewarded with one excellent dessert. They’re various flavors of doughnut holes that come with chocolate and caramel dipping sauces, and they’re amazing. Oh, and they come with shots of milk to wash them down. See? Healthy.

For Mom & Dad: A Rocco’s Tacos Margarita

1313 E Las Olas Blvd., roccostacos.com/fortlauderdale
This seemingly always busy Las Olas spot has an incredible tequila selection, and a margarita menu to match. Keep it classy with the Cadillac Margarita (El Mayor Anejo, Grand Marnier and Rocco’s housemade sour mix). Satisfy a sweet tooth with the Strawberry Margarita (Casa Noble Crystal, fresh strawberries, fresh basil, fresh lime juice and agave nectar) or satisfy something entirely different with the Jalapeño Margarita (Tanteo jalapeño-infused tequila, Cointreau, Rocco’s housemade sour mix and agave nectar). There’s plenty more on the margarita menu too … but maybe that should be for a second trip.
