Under the Sea

It’s not hard to find great seafood in Fort Lauderdale. Here are just a few great dishes from several of our favorite spots.

1. Calypso Combo

Calypso Restaurant & Raw Bar, 460 S Cypress Rd., Pompano Beach, calypsorestaurant.com
This unassuming spot does some of the best seafood around and if you’ve brought your appetite, the Calypso Combo’s a heroic undertaking. Have a filet of dolphin, grilled lobster tail and three large grilled shrimp because really, there’s so much that’s tasty in the sea, and sometimes it’s best to try and get a bit of all of it onto your plate.

2. Jumbo Shrimp Island Curry

Wild Sea Oyster Bar & Grille, The Riverside Hotel, 620 E Las Olas Blvd. riversidehotel.com
The Riverside Hotel’s upmarket seafood restaurant offers any kind of seafood you might want, including an excellent raw bar. But for all the flavor, you can’t go wrong with their take on Caribbean fare. Plantain chips, banana and pineapple add flair to the miso rice-girded dish that packs a punch and might make you order a second beer.

3. Lobster Ravioli

Sapido, 111 SE 8th Ave. sapidogroup.com
This cozy spot does an amazing cross-section of the dishes of Northern Italy – and lobster ravioli that makes you question why you ever had lobster served any way other than pasta-encased. A light white wine sauce, drizzled olive oil and shrimp accompany the large, meaty ravioli that you will absolutely savor one by one.

4. Candy Cane Roll

Sky Thai Sushi, 350 E Las Olas Blvd. skythaisushi.com
Our recommendation for Sky Thai Sushi is go hungry, bring friends and try a bit of as much as you can. One can’t-miss roll on the expansive sushi menu is the Candy Cane. (Don’t worry, the name has to do more with the way it looks than the way it tastes.) This pan-Asian restaurant adds a bit of Korean flavor to a roll that includes tuna, whitefish, kimchee sauce and sesame oil topping Hamachi, scallions and cucumber inside out.
